Tooth Coloured Restorations & Metal Free Fillings

sidebar-latest-technologyWe use the latest materials at DesignDentistry to provide you with the best results for both the function and aesthetics of your smile.

At our Bentleigh East practice we can remove your amalgam and mercury-based filling material permanently. Mercury-based fillings are unsightly, and cause structural weakness to the tooth that can result in long-term problems.

Not only is the high concentration of mercury in fillings potentially harmful to your health, metal fillings can cause more long-term harm. Mercury fillings expand and contract in extreme temperatures which can result in your tooth cracking.

If a tooth cracks and it doesn’t crack below the gum line it can be saved with a dental crown, a dental crown will cover the cracked tooth, both saving and restoring the tooth. However, if your tooth cracks and the crack goes below the gum line—that is, the root of your tooth is affected—nine times out of ten your tooth will have to extracted.

Tooth Coloured Restorations

Modern fillings are not only better for your tooth, but they can be blended to match the natural colour of your teeth and are stain resistant. Unlike amalgam fillings, there’s no drilling needed for tooth coloured fillings.

If you have existing metallic fillings that you are not happy with, we can still help you. Tooth coloured restorations are not only limited to new restorations, but it is a simple treatment to remove your old fillings and replace them with new materials creating that complete, white smile you really want.

Problems with Amalgam

Did you know that amalgam fillings don’t protect your tooth as comprehensively as a tooth coloured filling?

There are two main disadvantages to amalgam fillings. Firstly, amalgam fillings require part of your tooth to be drilled down in order to place the filling. Secondly, cavities can actually form underneath an amalgam filling which could result in either root canal treatment or extraction.

With tooth coloured fillings this is not a problem. The decay is removed from your tooth and the filling inserted to protect your tooth. With a tooth coloured filling no healthy part of the tooth needs to be removed and it fills the cavity leaving no room for further decay.

It is, however, important to note that a filling does not mean that your tooth is impervious to decay. You will still need to brush and floss as normal to maintain optimal oral hygiene.
